Described as being of swarthy skin and about forty years of age, Balthazar is said to come from the far off kingdom of Ethiopia. Like Caspar and Melchior, he too saw the star and then proceeded to plan his trip and choose gifts to offer to the newborn king. His caravan was a long one, with hundreds of camels laden with precious woods, silk, rugs and shawls. He was impressed with the humble shelter in which Christ was resting. Looking around at all the riches which he had brought, he realized how insignificant they were. From the great collection he chose three grains of incense which when lit would provide fragrant smoke.
