It was not unusual to see soap peddlers selling natural soaps made with olive oil and soda ash. It’s an all purpose soap that was also used by the “bugadieres” (washer women). French milled soaps remain popular today. In Marseilles soap was a prosperous business from the middle of the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
